Pine Tree State Arboretum

Pine Tree State ArboretumThe Pine Tree State Arboretum offers a unique educational opportunity for students at all grade levels. The six-mile trail system is open to hiking, jogging, bird watching, non-motorized biking horseback riding, and cross-country skiing on groomed winter trails. A number of trails have hard-packed surfaces suitable for wheelchair access. Field trip programs cost $4 per child, with a $60 group minimum for each program. Outdoor programs for all grade levels are available weekdays during the months of May, June, September and October covering the topics of wildlife, water, plants and forestry. K-1 programs last 1 hour, and grades 2-12 programs last approximately 1.5 hours. Programs generally start at 10:00, and include orientation, an introduction to the Arboretum and time to hike to an outdoor classroom. The PTSA Outdoor Education Center Learning Guide is available for purchase from the Arboretum. The Learning Guide activities are correlated to the Maine State Learning Results. More detail is available on the Arboretum's example program list. Groups must provide one teacher or adult chaperone for every six students. Come prepared for the weather, as it can be chilly any time of the year. Long pants, sturdy boots, and layers such as sweaters and wind breakers that can be added or removed are recommended. While not all PTSA trails are wheelchair accessible, programs and activities are available for students with disabilities. After your program, enjoy the extensive plant collections, woodlands and hiking trails. Stay for a picnic lunch. The arboretum may be reached via phone at 621-0031, and additional information is available at Directions
